Doodle Coat Types
Flat coat- looks very similar to a retriever. Flat coated doodles are usually not your typical “fluffy” doodle, but may have spots of longer hair commonly on the ears and neck area. Flat coats can also sometimes but not always feel wirey. These are a very low maintenance coat but sometimes do shed. Pictured below is Daisy, she is considered to have a flat coat.
Wavy- very fluffy and usually feel like fleece. These pups have loose curls when the coat is left long. These coats require a good amount of maintenance and frequent grooming. Tucker is pictured below and has a wavy coat.
Curly- curly coated doodles have very soft curls as puppies and as they grow into adults they become tight spiral curls very similar to a poodle. When groomed and blow dried dogs with this type of coat appear straight and poofy. Pictured below are Liberty and Calla, who both have curly coats.
Generations of doodles
F1- one parent is poodle and the other parent is golden retriever. F1 pups are 50/50, and coats are usually wavy. Some shedding is likely possible.
F1B- one parent is a F1 and one parent is a poodle. F1B pups are essentially around 75% poodle and 25% golden retriever. F1B pups are generally a great choice for people who suffer from allergies, as their coats are normally one of the most shed free and allergy friendly. F1b pups can have a curly or a wavy coat.
F2- both parents are F1 doodles. F2 pups are still 50/50 however some puppies within a F2 litter will likely be flat coated (look like a retriever). It is also likely to have wavy and curly coated pups in the litter. Shedding will vary for each puppy depending on what genetics each puppy has inherited from each parent.
F2B- one parent is a F2 and one parent is a poodle. F2B pups can vastly vary depending on the F2 parents genetics. Essentially the pups will still be around 75% poodle and 25% golden retriever, however depending on the F2 parents some of the pups in the litter might have traits more similar to an F1 doodle.
MULTIGENERATIONAL- the parents can be a combination of generations, but typical multigenerational pups consist of three or more generations of doodle to doodle or poodle breedings making them a high perfecta of poodle when compared to golden retriever. Coats can vary, but most commonly are curly or wavy and a generally a good choice for people with allergies.
